About Blake Essig

April 16, 2011

My name is Blake Essig and I am studying broadcast journalism at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. I  am a 26- year-old originally from San Diego, however I began my college experience in Santa Barbara, where I played football and hockey.

I am an avid sports fan and like to call myself an athlete. I have played hockey, soccer, football, baseball, and golf competitively, however my body has been unable to tolerate the intense demands I have placed upon it, and as a result I have undergone numerous surgeries. I currently referee soccer on the national level and am on the fast track to becoming a FIFA and major league soccer referee.

I put my college education on hold after two years, and set up camp in Seattle. I managed a restaurant called Steelhead Diner for three years, during which the restaurant won numerous awards, including Best New Restaurant, Wine Spectator Award, Washington Wine Commission Grand Award, and was a James Beard Award finalist. Living and working in Seattle sparked my own interest in good food and wine.

I am currently completing my degree in broadcast journalism and would like to ultimately become a sports journalist, reporter, anchor, broadcaster etc. I basically want to do it all.
